Government Teachers Training Institute for Women has a long history of 140 years to its credit. Secondary Training School for Mistresses was started in existing campus, Balmatta, Mangalore in the year 1912, during the British rule under the southern circle of Public Instruction Department. It was under the supervision of the coimbotoor inspector for public instructions. The first independence day in the year 1947 was celebrated in the Training School and then superintendent KUM A. EITHIYAR hoisted the national flag on the day.(The photo below)

The education system included classes from Std. I to Std X and then the interested students could pursue their education in the Teaching field. There was no discrimination of any kind in the admission of the students irrespective of their caste, creed, religion or language. Importance was given for all round development through both curricular and extra curricular activities. The institution’s service towards the society was immense. Students participated in the fund raising programme during the 2nd World War. As an act of appreciation, the then Govt. pleader and Barrister Advocate Mr. A.K. Nambiyar delivered a speech on the world war effects. Pre University college was stared in the year 1972 under the same management but in the year 1987 it was bifurcated. The high school and the P.U.C. department were separated from Government Teachers Training Institute for Women including the Practicing Primary section. From time to time there has been a great and required changes to the course of training. Earlier the course was known as the TCH (Teaching Certificate Higher) admitted students after the completion of the SSLC. Around 20 years back the same course admitted students after the completion of PUC. In the year 2002-03 the entire system of syllabus and teaching was changed and the training course came to be known as D.Ed. (Diploma in Education). Now from year 2016-17 the training programme is renamed as D.El.Ed(Diploma in Elementary Education).
